Job Summary St. Leonard’s Place Peel is seeking a Casual Line Cook to join our kitchen team. Reporting to the Supervisor of Operations you will prepare and serve nutritious, well balanced meals to the residents in accordance with the organization's philosophy and goals & objectives. This role involves contributing to the overall well-being of the residents by providing meals that support both physical and emotional health, while maintain a clean, safe and organized kitchen environment.
Key Responsibilities Client Interaction and Support Engage with residents during meal service while maintaining professional boundaries, fostering a positive dining experience. Respond to residents’ feedback regarding meal and food preferences.
Quality Assurance/Health and Safety Adhering to all health and safety polices and procedures, including wearing appropriate kitchen attire and using proper handling and sanitation procedures. Identifying and reporting any health, safety or environmental concerns to management promptly. Ensuring all food prepared is handled and stored in accordance with food safety regulations. Maintain cleanliness of the kitchen, including washing dishes, utensils, cooking equipment, and ensuring work stations are properly sanitized.
Meal Preparation and Cooking Prepare and cook meals in accordance with pre-determined menus, ensuring that meals are nutritious, balanced, and meet the dietary needs of residents including any specific dietary restrictions or preferences. Ensure food quality and presentation is consistent and in compliance with health standards. Use appropriate cooking techniques and follow recipes, portion sizes, and food safety guidelines. Prepare special meals or snacks.
Inventory and Supply Management Assist in inventory management, ordering food, supplies and communicate with supervisors regarding shortages or needs. Ensure proper labelling and storage of food items to prevent spoilage.
Stakeholder Collaboration Collaborating with other staff and residents to ensure food preferences, dietary needs, and cultural sensitives are respected. Building and maintaining positive relationships with external agencies. Work closely with other kitchen staff to ensure smooth meal service and preparation. · Attend staff meetings to discuss menu planning, dietary needs, and client preferences.
Professional Development Actively participate in team and townhall meetings Attend all trainings as required Participation in workshops, seminars or conferences. Opportunities for certification in areas such as First Aid and CPR Mentorship from senior staff to support career growth and skill enhancement Opportunity for funding to pursue education or training to support personal and professional growth within the organization Lead or contribute to special projects as needed. Participate and join in committees
Qualifications Education and Experience High School Diploma or GED equivalent; culinary training or certification preferred. Current Food Handler’s Certificate Minimum 1 year of experience in a kitchen or food service environment, preferably in a residential or healthcare setting. Experience working in a supportive housing living environment is an asset. Knowledge of food safety practices and dietary needs Knowledge of food serving techniques and principles of sanitation. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite Software
Skills, Competencies & Assets Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to actively listen and provide clear instructions. Ability to take imitative Works well as part of a team Ability to maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment Compassionate and empathetic attitude Cultural sensitivity and inclusivity Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage time effectively
Work Conditions Maybe required to work evenings, weekends, or holidays. Physical demands may include standing for long periods, lifting heavy items, and operating kitchen equipment.
