About The Role
The Lead Data Engineer at McKesson is a vital senior individual contributor within the Decision Intelligence organization. This role is responsible for leading the design, development, and operationalization of scalable data engineering and analytics solutions across the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Services (PSaS) Business Unit. As a technical leader, the Lead Data Engineer combines deep hands-on engineering expertise with solution leadership, mentorship, and cross-functional influence. The position involves overseeing end-to-end technical delivery of complex data initiatives, influencing architecture decisions, and ensuring the development of reliable, high-performance data pipelines. The role also emphasizes automation, reusability, and operational stability, enabling advanced analytics and machine learning use cases to drive business insights and strategic decision-making.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess recognized expertise in data engineering and analytics within large enterprise environments. A minimum of 10+ years of relevant experience, along with a degree or equivalent qualification, is typically required. Proven ability to independently lead complex technical initiatives with minimal oversight is essential, as is experience influencing technical direction and mentoring other engineers without formal management responsibilities. Deep understanding of data architecture, ETL/ELT patterns, and large-scale data processing is critical. Strong stakeholder communication and collaboration skills are necessary to effectively translate analytical requirements into scalable solutions. Technical proficiency in SQL, Python, scripting, and cloud data platforms is also required.
Responsibilities
Lead end-to-end technical delivery for complex data engineering initiatives or domains, ensuring alignment with enterprise data strategies. Serve as a senior technical point of contact for data engineering within cross-functional squads, providing guidance and expertise. Design and build scalable, reliable batch and real-time data pipelines across internal and external systems, ensuring data quality and performance. Collaborate with Data Architects and enterprise teams to influence architectural decisions and establish best practices. Define and uphold engineering standards, patterns, and practices to ensure consistency and maintainability of data solutions. Mentor and coach data engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and technical coaching to foster a culture of continuous improvement. Ensure the quality, reliability, and operational stability of data products, overseeing testing strategies and production readiness. Partner with Product Managers, Data Scientists, Analysts, and business stakeholders to translate analytical needs into scalable data solutions. Promote an automation-first and reusability-focused mindset across all data engineering projects. Identify technical debt proactively and lead remediation efforts to maintain system health. Support advanced analytics and machine learning initiatives through optimized data models and pipelines. Communicate technical designs, trade-offs, risks, and outcomes clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
